The episode runs three timelines at once — the crisis unfolding now, the lead-up to it, and a series of flashbacks tracing how every person on board actually got here: Kaylee's recruitment, how Jayne ended up switching sides, Inara's very specific terms for that shuttle, and the moment Mal first laid eyes on Serenity at the back of a used-ship lot. Character origin as survival story. Both hosts put this at the top. Leo calls it one of the best episodes he's seen.
