Mal and Kaylee go undercover at a high-society ball on Persephone to close a deal with Sir Warwick Harrow — a nobleman who needs cargo moved off-world without the local powers knowing. The plan is simple: look respectable, make contact, don't cause a scene. Mal tells Kaylee she'll look like a sheep in a dress. She shows up and every engineer at the party immediately wants to talk to her. Inara is there as Atherton Wing's companion. Wing is wealthy, polished, and has been offering Inara a permanent life on Persephone. Then he says something about her in front of Mal. Mal punches him. This is a formal duel challenge — Atherton Wing has killed twelve men with a sword. Inara spends the night teaching Mal which end to hold. The duel goes badly until it doesn't. "Mercy is the mark of a great man." "Guess I'm just a good man." He pokes him twice more. Post-reaction: Leo watching Firefly for the first time and calling it a Guardians of the Galaxy precursor — and he's not wrong. The Mal/Inara dynamic: two people doing morally grey things who actually see each other clearly. What being a companion really means — the education, the swordsmanship, the social standing — and Syntell's Miss Kitty from Gunsmoke story that ties it all together. Kaylee walking into a room of fancy people and immediately becoming the most interesting one there. Jayne having a tea party while Mal was out getting stabbed.
