Sixteen families on a one-way trip to the outer planets. River knows something is wrong before they dock. The bodies are hanging from the ceiling. Jayne goes around a corner and finds one more. The survivor is alive — barely. Reavers did this. And before Mal can think too hard about it, an Alliance cruiser pulls up and Commander Harken detains the whole crew. His working theory: Mal attacked the ship himself. Because accusing a Browncoat is easier than believing in Reavers. Simon and River are not in custody. They are in space suits, clinging to the outside of the hull. Waiting. Post-reaction: River felt that ship before they found it — not a coincidence. What Reavers are, where they come from, and what it means that a man can be so traumatized he starts becoming one. Mal breaking the survivor's neck to save the life of the man who just tried to impound his ship.
