Serenity (2005) REACTION | Firefly Movie | Leo's First Time Watching | Syntell & Leo Syntell and Leo (Geekly Goods) react to Serenity — the 2005 Joss Whedon film continuing the story of the crew of Firefly. The Alliance has a sin, and it's the same sin as every regime that has decided it knows what people should be. The Operative doesn't rank it as a sin. He has no name, no rank, no institution — he works for a better world, a world without sin, and he's willing to do whatever that takes, including kill the people who built it. What River Tam knows is what the Alliance buried. Shepherd Book told Mal: every man who's ever fought for something bigger than himself, every man who's ever lost for it — what gets you through is belief. The Alliance's belief is in the future. The future requires River Tam to stay silent, and Mal has already decided that's not going to happen. Miranda is a planet that doesn't exist in Alliance records but exists in River's head. The crew of Serenity goes looking and finds it: 30 million people, all dead, none of them wounded. The Alliance packed G23 Paxelon hydrochlorate into the planet's air processors to pacify the aggression, make people better, make them easier to manage. It worked. They stopped fighting, stopped eating, stopped breeding, stopped living. All of them just let themselves die. The tenth of a percent who had the opposite reaction became the Reavers. The Alliance made the Reavers. Getting that signal out costs them Haven, costs them Shepherd Book going slow, costs them disguising Serenity as a Reaver ship — bodies tied to the hull in red paint — to make it through the battle alive. Wash lands them. "I'm a leaf on the wind." Then a harpoon comes through the cockpit. The crew has to keep moving. River takes on the whole room. Post-reaction: Leo's first time through Serenity, and he came out the other side wanting more seasons, more episodes, more of everything. Chiwetel Ejiofor's Operative said "I'm a monster" without hesitation, without drama — cold, devout, certain, and correct — and both hosts left the scene still sitting with it. Wash's death hit exactly the way it was designed to: no warning, no sacrifice buildup, no dramatic preparation. Just Wash landing the ship and then gone, the story continuing without him. The slow death and the fast one, Shepherd Book and Wash, devastating in opposite directions. Both hosts leave with the same wish list: Lord Miller writing the animated series, Studio MAPPA or Arcane-level animation, and more time with these characters. We can never stop the signal. RIP Ron Glass.
