I booked a random kayak tour in rural Japan. What I didn't expect was that my guide had recently taken over her family's 50-year-old ryokan. Soon after becoming the owner, more than half of the staff left. At the same time, her hometown continues to lose people every year. Instead of walking away, she chose to stay. This is the story of a young owner trying to rebuild her family's ryokan, support her staff, and protect the town she calls home.
