Electric field strengths and electric potentials are intimately linked to each other. Having a good understanding of what binds these two notions to each other is essential for diving deeper into aspects of electromagnetism like Faraday’s law and electromagnetic induction. This video discusses that relationship in detail. First, we derive a formula for the electric potential energy that a test charge gets when placed in a field generated by a punctual source charge. From that, we derive the formula for the electric potential at any position of that field. That allows us to graph the potential function, and realize that the absolute value of the derivative of that function is actually the electric field strength.
