In the last 2 episodes of “What is an Electron?”, we have truly opened Pandora’s box. We realised that particle-wave duality is in fact an illusion, and ephasised the importance of intrinsic properties when attempting to define something. So what now? Well, let me introduce you to the base concept of quantum field theory, howq it could help us identify what an electron is, and also and how strangely, it could seem like the result of a computer program. I use this well-known analogy, that is highly speculative but nonetheless useful to grasp the interconnection between things. Then, I focus back onto the electronic field and visualize the electron as an excitation of that field. What does this all mean? well, it appears to us a little out of reach… Yet, what is truly important is the journey, and I am glad we haven’t completed it yet, although with AI showing up, we might not be that far from the finish line.
