Currently Playing: The Physics of the Sun and Main Sequence Stars (Nuclear Physics and Astrophysics)

How long will our Sun shine that wonderful light that allows life to flourish on Earth? If you want to know, or even better, learn how to figure out the answer yourself, take the time to dive deep into this video where Astrophysics and Nuclear physics dance with each other in beautiful ballet. You will not regret it! You wake up. After the morning routine, you begin your day under a sunny sky, not thinking twice about the marvelous object above you, that is embracing you and everything around you with it’s a light at the source of all known life. Day after day, we just take it for granted and then, move on… But not today. Today, in this video we will discuss together where this light comes from by exploring how the sun works. For that we will need to understand in what stage of its life the Sun is today (called the main sequence phase), and also where the Sun positions itself in the numerous start types that can be found in space. Light is energy, so we will look in detail how this energy can be extracted from the matter in the core of the sun. We will also realize how the extreme conditions created there by gravity gives Mother Nature the key to unlock such energy! After this deep dive into the Nuclear Physics of a main sequence star, we will get a little more self-centered, and discuss about our own survival situation as a species. How long do we have before the Sun changes into a star which would be much less friendly with its inner planets, like the Earth? And guess what? You will have to calculate this yourself ! This video teaches you everything you need to succeed at this challenge with your own reasoning. Of course at the end of the video, I’ll offer you an example for an answer… … and then, realize that there is a little more to it… You’ll see 😉 I hope you enjoy this video as much as I made it! #astrophysics #physics #nuclearphysics #solarenergy - - - - - - - - - STRUCTURE OF THE VIDEO 00:00 Nuclear and astrophysics at the heart of the source of life… (Introduction) 01:01 The lifecycle of stars 02:24 What are main sequence stars? 05:41 Nuclear reactions in main sequence stars 07:29 How to calculate the energy released during a nuclear fusion 12:47 How long will the Sun remain a main sequence star (Exercise) ? 17:32 The Physics of the Sun (Video Conclusion and credits). - - - - - - - - - VIDEOS TO WATCH: Particle physics Playlist: If you have no clue about what are positons, neutrinos, photons etc. , I highly recommend that you look the series of videos about the standard model of particle physics on this channel.
