Electromagnetic Induction is the process by which mechanical energy can be converted to electrical energy and vice et versa. In other words, it is at the heart of modern technology. This is why it is so fundamental for any student in physics to possess a solid understanding of electromagnetic Induction. In this small series of two videos, we visit the basics: Faraday’s law and Lenz law. This first episode, we derive faraday’s laws step by step using only mathematics tools of high school level so that the viewer can acquire a good understanding of the phenomena at hand in EM induction. The video by looking at the etymology behind the words electromagnetic induction. It presents then an extract of a previous video (What is a magnetic field) to remind the viewer of the right-hand rules. The next part of the video consists in deriving the emf induced at the extremities of a conductor moving in a magnetic field. Then, we derive an expression for the rate of change of magnetic flux that occurs when this moving conductor is part of an electric circuit. Finally, by combining both results, we are able to derive Faraday’s law: the induced emf is proportional to the rate of change of flux. At the end of the video, I mention briefly the negative sign that pops up in Faraday’s formulation: I state that it corresponds to Lenz law. The next episode goes much more in detail by showing why that is so. - - - - - - - - - STRUCTURE OF THE VIDEO 00:00 What is of electromagnetic induction? 00:50 Electromagnetic induction: etymology. 01:40 Prior knowledge for this video discussing EM induction 03:57 Induction of a voltage in a conductor moving in a magnetic field. 07:12 Deriving the rate of change of flux in a looped circuit. 08:43 Deriving Faraday’s law. 09:17 What is Lenz’s Law. - - - - - - - - - VIDEOS TO WATCH: What is an electric Field? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrHCj09_dpc&list=PLU0ETLdKNmc6nrvb9vLIefhTjktqnZM3G&index=8 What is an electric potential? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3GrOKre__0&list=PLU0ETLdKNmc6nrvb9vLIefhTjktqnZM3G&index=6 What is a magnetic Field? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOQK57fgu80&list=PLU0ETLdKNmc6nrvb9vLIefhTjktqnZM3G&index=2 What is Flux ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANXIdrb30dc&list=PLU0ETLdKNmc6nrvb9vLIefhTjktqnZM3G&index=3 The link between electric potential and electric field strength https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMr3bk8DD1k&list=PLU0ETLdKNmc6nrvb9vLIefhTjktqnZM3G&index=1 The conventional current https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzPOGFgsJfE&list=PLU0ETLdKNmc5CUU9L5J6JTYHTPRZFA9I1&index=1 - - - - - - - - - MUSIC ALBUM Physics Made Easy « The soundtracks ».
