I bought an abandoned 120-year-old general store and post office with the dream of restoring it and turning it into my home. After years of neglect and nearly two years of renovation work, the building still isn’t watertight, so restoring the historic windows is the next major step. Instead of replacing everything with new windows, I’ve decided to preserve as much of this old building’s history as possible by restoring and reusing its original antique window sashes, along with historic sashes salvaged from my dad’s collection and my own store. But this week, that plan is put to the ultimate test. I’m attempting joinery work I’ve never done before to see if I have the skills to make these 120-year-old window sashes work for my homestead. There’s very little room for error, and if I can’t pull this off, I may have to rethink my entire window restoration plan.
