This week at my abandoned 120-year-old general store renovation, I had to admit that I made a pretty big mistake with the historic windows ~ but instead of letting it derail the week, I kept moving forward and finally finished the upstairs hallway. I’m restoring and renovating this old general store and former post office one project at a time, trying to preserve as much of the original character as possible while slowly turning this long-abandoned historic building into a home. This renovation has included restoring the original wood windows, repairing old plaster and trim, working through structural and permit challenges, and bringing life back to a building that has been sitting neglected for decades. In this episode, I share what went wrong with the window project, what I’m planning to do to fix it, and then get back to work upstairs. I finish the hallway by completing the picture frame molding, chair rail, painting, trim work, and finally hanging the chandelier ~ bringing one more part of this abandoned building closer to feeling finished. Renovating an old house is rarely a straight line, and restoring a 100+ year-old commercial building comes with even more surprises. There are mistakes, repairs, unexpected problems, historic preservation decisions, and a lot of learning as I go. But little by little, this abandoned general store is changing.
