Moments later, passengers could see dramatic bursts of flame coming from the left engine, and the pilots declared a MAYDAY. The crew stopped their climb and returned to Myrtle Beach, where the aircraft landed safely. All 172 passengers and nine crew members were reported safe. Bird debris was subsequently found on the runway, and the aircraft was removed from service for inspection. The FAA is investigating the incident. But what exactly was happening inside that engine? Was it really on fire? And what does a flight crew do when a bird strike causes an engine problem immediately after takeoff? Captain Steeeve — a retired airline captain and naval aviator with more than four decades of aviation experience — breaks down the ATC communications, the apparent engine malfunction, the decision to return to Myrtle Beach, and why flames coming from a jet engine don't always mean what passengers might think.
