Shortly after departing Chicago O'Hare, United Express Flight 5344, operated by SkyWest Airlines, experienced a stabilizer trim runaway and declared an emergency. The CRJ-200 crew quickly recognized the problem, worked through the emergency procedures, and safely returned to the airport just minutes after takeoff. Reports indicate the crew experienced increasing difficulty controlling the aircraft before landing safely back in Chicago. A stabilizer trim runaway is one of those events that immediately gets a pilot's attention. Fortunately, this crew recognized the problem early, followed their procedures, and brought the aircraft safely back to the ground.
