This treaty marked the beginning of what many outside observers called an 'Unholy Alliance': A time of far reaching cooperation between two ostracised states in Europe. They both saw great benefits in helping each other and go cooperate on economic and military terms. Without this cooperation between a western democracy and a socialist dictatorship, neither country would have been able to rebuild its industry or to keep their armies modernised. But this wasn't a period of friendship, but rather of inevitable practicality and tensions between those two countries arose constantly, especially after Joseph Stalin became dictator.
