But the Poles refused to surrender without a fight: In 1794, an uprising broke out led by Tadeusz Kosciuszko, an incredibly talented military leader who had also served in the American War for Independence. But he didn't just fight for the independence of his home country, but also for the freedom of its inhabitants. In order to motivate the Polish-Lithuanian population to take up arms against the Russian forces, he abolished the inhumane practice of serfdom. Watch today's episode to find out why the Kosciuszko uprising broke out, why it was so hard to crack down and what the eventual final partition of Poland-Lithuania meant for its inhabitants.
