For many Polish patriots, the Duchy of Warsaw was a glimmer of hope and the first step towards the recreation of Polish statehood. But the reality looked rather different. Napoleon used the country for his own purposes, exploited it mercilessly and sent tens of thousands of Poles to their deaths in his Russian Campaign of 1812.
