It was spearheaded by chancellor Otto von Bismarck, who sought to reduce the power of the Catholic Church and transfer more control over to the state. The endeavour turned out to be a failure on Bismarck's end as the catholic minority in Prussia grew stronger together, developed a feeling of solidarity and all stood behind the Centre Party. But why did Bismarck even launch the 'Kulturkampf' and even allied with the liberal parties in the parliaments? What were the consequences for the catholic population? And was the “Kulturkampf” really just a futile effort without any real redeeming consequences? Those questions and many more will be answered in today's video!
