For someone hailing from the UK, where things can feel insanely overpriced, it’s a real breath of fresh air not to feel like you’re getting completely shafted for so many of the everyday things we buy here in the small northeastern Chinese city where we live. Of course, I’m saying that entirely from my own perspective. What feels affordable to me certainly won’t feel affordable to everyone, and I’m very aware that there are plenty of people here for whom even everyday expenses can be a real financial burden. Some of the more high-end places we visit would also be considered genuinely expensive by many locals. Affordability is always relative to what you earn and what you’re used to paying, but compared with the cost of living I grew up with in the UK, I’m incredibly grateful for how far our money can go here.
