Back in 2011, when Yangshuo was still more of a backpackers’ destination, I spent my summer break from teaching volunteering at a rooftop bar just off West Street. It was busy even then, but it still had that backpacker energy that made me fall in love with the place. Fast-forward 15 years, and West Street feels almost unrecognizable. The arrival of high-speed rail made Yangshuo far more accessible, the crowds poured in, and what was once a quirky backpacker town has become, in my eyes at least, one of the biggest tourist traps in China. Thankfully, the countryside surrounding Yangshuo still has the magic I remember — at least for now. I had to come back again, though, especially with my kids. My wife and I returned in 2017 for a romantic getaway, and even then you could see Yangshuo beginning to change, but it hadn’t yet become the absolute sea of people it is today. So maybe this trip is a bit of a farewell. I’ll always love Yangshuo and everything this place meant to me as a young man discovering China, but I think it might finally be time to say goodbye to West Street and close that chapter of my life for good. P.S.
