But that's the problem, isn’t it? Despite initial reactions being surprisingly warm, the latest Disney remake is yet another bland, baffling, and ultimately unnecessary entry into the studio’s live-action nostalgia machine. It’s a film caught between honoring the original and trying to differentiate itself, and in doing so, ends up stuck in a no-man’s land where neither approach fully works. Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell), this remake shows brief flashes of emotional depth, especially in its final stretch. But those moments are buried beneath a confusing array of arbitrary changes and bizarre omissions—like completely removing Gantu, straightwashing Pleakley, and reshuffling scenes purely for the illusion of novelty. What's left is a hollow echo of the 2002 classic, one that speeds through its emotional beats like it’s checking boxes rather than earning them. The original Lilo & Stitch was a beautifully messy story about broken people (and aliens) learning to love each other and build a family from their shared loneliness. It was specific, heartfelt, and unafraid to show real emotional weight, particularly in the relationship between Lilo and her sister Nani. This remake, despite being largely the same in plot, loses sight of that clarity, trading heartfelt storytelling for shallow imitation. The core theme here—“sometimes we do bad things, but that doesn’t make us bad people”—is fine on paper, but when the script still tries to hit the emotional beats of the original’s actual theme, it rings hollow.
