That’s the best way to describe it. It’s competent, well-acted in places, visually impressive in moments—but also completely unnecessary. A carbon copy of the original animated classic that, despite being crafted by the same filmmaker, Dean DeBlois, never once justifies its own existence. This isn’t an adaptation. It’s a direct translation from animation to live action without considering the shift in mediums. Sure, the flying sequences are stunning, Toothless still tugs at your heartstrings (even if his design looks oddly out of place in this “realistic” world), and the performances—particularly Gerard Butler reprising his role as Stoick—inject some genuine emotion. But more often than not, this feels like a cover band version of the original. All the notes are there, but the soul? The soul is missing. The problem isn’t just that this remake exists—it’s why it exists. Animation is once again being devalued, as if translating it into live-action somehow elevates the material. But How to Train Your Dragon didn’t need elevating. It was already one of the greatest modern animated films. Jay Baruchel’s voice performance as Hiccup uniquely captured the emotional tug-of-war through a delicate balance of tone, vocal delivery, and emotional nuance—effortlessly shifting between snarky adolescent sarcasm, quiet introspection, and bursts of impassioned bravery. His voice carried both the awkwardness of youth and the wisdom of someone trying to forge a new path, which made Hiccup’s growth feel organic and deeply resonant. between teenage awkwardness and budding leadership in a way that Mason Thames, though solid, can’t quite replicate in this more grounded, understated (a bug, not a feature) version of the story. And that’s really the issue—this live-action HTTYD is stuck between whether or not it wants to fully ditch the animated style and commit to being a realistic Viking/fantasy flick. It looks like cosplay at times, and plays like a MidJourney prompt brought to life: superficially impressive, but lacking soul and substance. Even John Powell’s legendary score is repurposed note for note, without even an ounce of reinvention.
