What should have been an exhilarating send-off for Ethan Hunt instead plays like an ego-driven, insecure, and downright embarrassing conclusion to this once great franchise. Bloated, tedious, and unbearably self-serious, The Final Reckoning is plagued by scatterbrained storytelling where scenes have no beginning or end — just endless exposition dumps, clumsy flashbacks, and subplots that go absolutely nowhere. It’s a “greatest hits” remix of the franchise with none of the charm, coherence, or propulsion that made these films work. Characters exist as empty bodies on the screen, drowning in a mess of overinflated ideas the film never actually commits to. Yes, there’s one impressive set piece — but one great sequence does not a great movie make. The rest is oppressive, miserable, and joyless, a suffocating reminder that even the most reliable franchises can end with a whimper. For the first time ever, I walked out of a Mission: Impossible film with a new appreciation for Dead Reckoning. And that’s saying something.
