🎬 In this FilmSpeak video essay, we discuss Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day and why you were wrong about Disclosure Day! 🔔 SUBSCRIBE: https://youtube.com/filmspeak?sub_confirmation=1 Steven Spielberg still makes me cry. Disclosure Day is the film we need right now. Steven Spielberg has done it again. Disclosure Day is another Spielberg masterpiece—a thrilling, deeply emotional science-fiction epic about first contact, empathy, communication, and our fading ability to believe in something better. In this video essay, I break down why Disclosure Day feels like the culmination of Spielberg’s entire career. From the tense genre filmmaking of Duel, The Sugarland Express, and Jaws to the childlike wonder of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T., Spielberg draws upon decades of his own cinematic language to create one of his most timely and compassionate films. We’ll explore the parallels between Daniel Kellner and Margaret Fairchild, the ideological conflict between Noah Scanlan and Hugo, the film’s use of alien contact as a metaphor for human connection, and how Disclosure Day examines the difference between simply receiving information and truly understanding it. In an age defined by cynicism, misinformation, isolation, and endless conflict, Spielberg dares to argue that empathy may be humanity’s greatest evolutionary advantage. Disclosure Day is not naïve about the world we live in. It understands our fear, distrust, anger, and hopelessness—but still chooses optimism. It is a plea to listen to one another, surrender ourselves to the power of storytelling, and remember that movie magic can change how we see the world. This is why Disclosure Day is one of Steven Spielberg’s greatest films—and one of my favorite movies of the year so far.
