Steven Spielberg’s 1993 masterpiece is remembered for its groundbreaking dinosaurs, unforgettable suspense, John Williams’ iconic score, and some of the greatest blockbuster filmmaking ever put to screen. But the real reason Jurassic Park has endured goes much deeper than the T. rex breakout, the raptors in the kitchen, or effects that somehow still look incredible today. The key is John Hammond. In this video, we return to Michael Crichton’s original Jurassic Park novel to explore the most important change Spielberg made when bringing the story to the big screen: transforming Hammond from Crichton’s cynical, profit-driven businessman into an idealistic showman whose ambition, creativity, and desire to inspire the world ultimately exceed his judgment. That change completely transforms the meaning of Jurassic Park. Because Spielberg doesn’t simply understand Hammond — he sees himself in him. By 1993, Spielberg had gone from a rebellious New Hollywood filmmaker to the architect of the modern blockbuster, helping reshape Hollywood through Jaws, E.T., Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, and countless other cultural landmarks. At the exact moment he was directing Jurassic Park, he was also preparing Schindler’s List, creating two films that represented the crossroads between Spielberg the entertainer and Spielberg the serious dramatic artist. Through Hammond, Jurassic Park becomes a surprisingly personal film about the responsibility of creation, the seductive power of spectacle, the commercialization of art, and what happens when a well-meaning visionary unleashes something onto the world that becomes bigger than he could ever control. We also explore how this idea carries into The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Ready Player One, Spielberg’s complicated relationship with the blockbuster culture he helped create, and why his empathy for Hammond may be the single most important reason Jurassic Park became such an enduring masterpiece.
