However, this view has changed dramatically in recent decades. Advances in radio astronomy and plasma physics enable us to understand that space is not only filled with matter, but that this matter is in a different state entirely—a state dominated by electromagnetic forces. The universe, it turns out, is wired! A novelty plasma ball lamp demonstrates similar behaviors of what we observe in deep space. Strands of plasma dance chaotically, constrained by their containers. Imagine these plasma strands on a galactic scale, stretching for billions of light-years, connecting galaxies, entire galaxy clusters—and beyond.
