Let's talk about the classic Justice League two-parter In Blackest Night. On the surface, it’s a straightforward, action-heavy story about John Stewart going on trial for planetary genocide. But beneath the surface, it’s a tremendous example of narrative streamlining. By throwing out decades of convoluted comic book storylines (including secret clone conspiracies, space-robot cults, and Earth-bound double agents) the writers distilled a messy 1970s comic book run into a sleek, deeply emotional character study, focusing on John Stewart and his feelings of guilt. Of course, all is not what it seems.
