For over 30 years, screenwriters avoided Bane’s convoluted comic book origin, reducing him to a mercenary, a toyetic monster, or a comedic punching bag. But I argue that the new Batman: Knightfall animated movie finally delivers the first truly faithful adaptation of the Man Who Broke the Bat. In this video essay, I trace Bane’s animated journey from his debut in Batman: The Vengeance of Bane through Batman: The Animated Series, The Batman, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Young Justice, and Harley Quinn. I analyse why his backstory (complete with Peña Duro, flooded solitary confinement cells, and demonic bat visions) was long considered unadaptable, and how Knightfall successfully streamlined his origin, while also expanding it.
