Currently Playing: How The Mad Hatter Twists The Truth | Batman: Caped Crusader

When Batman: Caped Crusader introduced Hattie Tetch, a vocal corner of the internet immediately cried foul over the gender swap, and the lack of sci-fi tech. But a quick dive into the Mad Hatter’s 75-year history reveals a simple truth: Jervis Tetch was never set in stone. From a 1948 Alice in Wonderland thief and a 1950s hat-hoarding imposter to Paul Dini’s ground-breaking 1992 BTAS overhaul, the Mad Hatter has always been a blank slate subject to radical reinvention. In this video essay, I break down how Caped Crusader turns the character into a 1940s media grifter modelled after Classic Hollywood gossip columnist Hedda Hopper. Instead of microchips and hypnotic rays, Hattie Tetch weaponises radio broadcasts, political propaganda, and moral panic to manipulate Gotham City, which is an interesting take on classic mind control. There's also a dramatic irony to her final fate and the role she serves in Joker's scheme. 🔔 Subscribe for more in-depth reviews and analyses of your favourite DC cartoons and comic books! 👍 If you liked the video don't forget to like, share, and leave a comment! 🔔 Click the bell icon to stay updated on future content! 🌟 Become a member for exclusive perks and early access! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0yFOXbX98P3qz-IvT7uRQQ/join 🎶 Music by Katt Strike - listen to the whole track here: https://youtu.be/VKdA2lCjtas?si=pi0iWvL5bMCJupHL If you enjoyed this video I've got many more you could watch. Many of the videos focus on the DC Animated Universe and the broader tradition of superhero media, examining how these stories use heroes and villains to explore moral choices, responsibility, and identity. From Batman: The Animated Series through to Batman: Caped Crusader, these discussions look at the ideas behind the stories: what makes a hero compelling, why certain episodes endure, and how small creative decisions can shape the meaning of an entire series.
