I was flown out to San Francisco to try the game and chat with the developers so I can come back here and give you my thoughts on it. There is a large caveat however, which is that despite being told otherwise, we were not given any gameplay or B Roll to show you. It’s not the end of the world, but It’s really odd given how good the reception to the game was amongst our playtesting group. It’s one of the more polished VR games I’ve played, and you’d think Twisted Pixel would want to show that off. So I guess just take my word when I talk about things; I’d love to show you, but we don’t have that luxury. Also, if anyones interested, my wife and I filmed a vlog where we explored San Fran a little bit, and it’s available in the description. Anyways, let’s talk about the game. The day started with a presentation from part of the Twisted Pixel team, explaining what we were playing and what to expect. Once we got in, it felt, simply, right. The demo opens a little ways into the game and features us moving through a shield helicarrier. By the way, quick note, the footage on screen is not ours, instead being provided B roll. I’ll have some B Roll of what you might look like when playing the game, but just keep that in mind. With that said, I found it interesting that they didn’t let us capture our own footage given how polished this was. I suffered no glitches in my session, which admittedly was only 30 minutes, and while there were some slight performance hitches, considering this game has months of polish and optimisation ahead of it, I’m sure it will be fine. Optimisation is something the team had noted, but I’ll get into that more when we talk about the Q&A. Gameplay wise, there is a difficult balance Twisted Pixel needed to strike, specifically the balance between making gameplay that encourages the player to experiment, but also keeping the tried and true methods fun. We were told beforehand to experiment as much as possible with different mechanics. For example, we have swords, and were told, what if you threw them? If our hand blows off, why not pick it up and toss it at an enemy? This was something I tried to keep in mind, and yet still, I found myself just enjoying the shooting. Ince Arkham Shadow’s release I’ve familiarised myself with a lot of VR games, so shooting a gun in VR isn’t the novelty it used to be. In spite of that, I still liked shooting because the iron sights worked exceptionally well, and the lack of resource management or ammo meant I could go as balls to the wall as possible. The game does plenty to encourage the fantasy, such as when an enemy is killed, their weapons will sometimes be thrown into the air, and slow down, so players can see it and think “wouldn’t it be cool if I grabbed the weapon in mid air and used it?” Melee on the other hand is a bit of a different story. Deadpool is a character deserving of a new video game, and Deadpool VR, or otherwise Marvel's Deadpool VR is that next game. I played Deadpool VR and these are my brutally honest thoughts. The Deadpool VR game is pretty good, with a few issues. Keep in mind that my Deadpool VR impressions was only for 30 minutes of Deadpool VR gameplay, so this is not a Deadpool VR review. I hope my previous Deadpool game review isn't the only time I can talk about a console Deadpool game. So what do you think of this new Deadpool game? I'd love to see a Deadpool and Wolverine game, but for now, this Deadpool VR trailer is holding me over.
