The first game was fluid, had great choices for builds, and was important of all, immersive. Especially considering how controversial the next Space themed RPG would be, and it seemed like Outer Worlds 2 had even more riding on it. I was able to play the game’s prologue over the last week, thanks to Microsoft, who provided a code, and I can now tell you everything this game does right, wrong, and what you can expect for the full release. But first, let's look at what the prologue entails. You create your character, meet some people on your ship, and do a job for someone who asks you to infiltrate a station. It’s a short slice, clocking in only an hour on my first run, and so there’s a bit of an issue, fundamentally, with what I am about to tell you, and that’s the different stages of RPGs. Every RPG has the player start as a mostly blank slate, with maybe a few skills and traits to boot, but what makes a good RPG in my eyes, is where your character ends up. It’s the story you tell, the choices you make, and the people you meet that craft your unique experience, and this is enhanced by decisions having long-term ramifications, or consequences that don’t manifest until much later. Skyrim might have many issues, but you can’t deny that despite everyone starting as a prisoner freed from Helgen, their character by level 40 will be unrecognisable. I bring this up because I can’t tell if Outer Worlds 2 satisfies this, because we only played the prologue. Most RPGs that have prologues like this contain their intros to a bubble. It’s a tutorial that shows us all the ropes associated with different paths before the inciting incident takes place and we’re let loose. A good RPG will have consequences for the choices I made here, and Outer Worlds 2 does that, but a great one would have those consequences create domino effects that would lead to events long down the line, and we didn’t get to see that. That doesn’t mean those consequences aren’t there, but that we won’t be able to see them yet. This immediately tapers my first criticism, which is that the intro didn’t provide much variation for me. This is likely because, again, with this intro being at the beginning, there is hardly any foundation for these choices to be built upon, and this is by all means standard. You are always following the same beats, your choices might give you different dialogue options, but the outcome is always the same. Again, and I know, broken record, but this is standard. So when it comes to discussing the choices you can make, keep this in mind, because in spite of this limitation, I still had a surprising amount of fun with this demo. I played it a few times, with my most notable being two which focused on a stealthy, brain based character, and a brutish brawn based character, and it all started with one of the most important parts of an RPG, the character creator. The Outer Worlds was one of the most unique RPGs to release in the last few years, and The Outer Worlds 2 is highly anticipated for this reason. This is not a The Outer Worlds 2 Review because this is only an hour of The Outer Worlds 2 gameplay. The Outer Worlds 2 will release in October and while this Outer Worlds 2 video isn't a review, I do plan to deliver an Outer Worlds 2 review when the game comes out, assuming people are interested in hearing that. What do you think of this Outer Worlds 2 gameplay, or the Outer Worlds 2 story? I'm excited to see what else is in store because the Outer Worlds 2 trailer shows a lot more than we see here.
