It’s actually a game mired by journalists who didn’t play the game, and if they did, wrote it off due to the main characters race, and a playerbase not willing to support it at full price, leaves Days Gone robbed of getting a sequel. Or at least, that is what some of its developers want you to believe. Then there’s the rest, who admitted that Days Gone has strengths, but acknowledged its flaws, understanding that it was never going to be a mainstream hit because we’ve simply seen this story too many times. Perhaps not with these exact words or exact designs, but these exact archetypes. The ultimate question I want to answer with this video is this; who’s right? The journalists? The fans? The developers? Maybe it’s all of them. Maybe None. While I find myself having struggled to enjoy Days Gone at times, it’s a game I have a soft spot for. If nothing else, Days Gone is a game with passion; even negative reviews noted that, and I think that’s exactly what allows for games like this to achieve a cult status. However, after 2,109 days since release, it’s difficult to find a solid consensus on the game that isn’t muddied with cultural controversy that ultimately sidetracks the discussion, or embellishment of the games flaws and strengths from fans and detractors alike. So, let’s dive into the post apocalyptic Oregon, and see if Days Gone deserved its fate, 6 years later. Deacon Saint John is a biker, part of the Mongrels Motorcycle club, who had a wife named Sarah, and a military background before the world went to shit. This is one of the many reasons why Deek, as his friends call him, is the ideal survivor. It immediately shuts down any ludonarrative dissonance. He can shoot well and execute stealth realistically because he is trained, and his experience with the horrors of war make him capable of stomaching life in the shit. Immediately, our introduction shows us that Deacon is grieving his wife Sarah, who died during the outbreak. What it also shows us however, is nothing new. This was a major criticism of Days Gone, that its protagonist was generic, and upon first glance, that is truly what it seems like. A character who loses a loved one, and in their trauma, turns into a grizzly killing machine, but not without some charm, and a heart remaining intact. Days Gone is a fantastic game, except if you are someone who made a Days Gone review. Days Gone 6 years 7 later, is seen as being robbed of a Days Gone Sequel, or an otherwise Days Gone 2. This Days Gone analysis, Days Gone critique, and Days Gone retrospective, will analyse if the claims about Days Gone woke reviewers were right, and will along the way present the Days Gone story explained, including Days Gone ending. Enjoy.
