Coming up on October 1st is the highly anticipated expansion for Ghost of Yotei, introducing a new game mode called most wanted, and a new narrative expansion called Echoes of Sekigahara. The expansion will be an extra $15 for those who already own the game, or, if you haven’t purchased the game then it comes bundled with the complete edition. This video will aim to answer two questions; one, if you bought the game already, is the expansion worth the extra money, and two, if you’ve never tried the game, then is the complete edition a good time to jump in? The answer to both of those is absolutely. Ghost of Yotei was easily my favourite game of 2025 and this DLC is just more of the base game, so if you liked Yotei, then you can’t go wrong. I want to spend the rest of this review looking a bit closer at what the DLC does well, and touch on some things that might potentially push you away from this expansion. To get that last part out of the way; if you are someone that didn’t enjoy Ghost of Yotei, this expansion will not change your mind. There are some mixups in the formula here, like colossal weapons that Atsu can use briefly, but aside from that combat is largely unchanged. I think Echos of Sekigahara makes excellent strides in the level design, storytelling, and side content parts of Yotei, but this will not in any way be reinventing the wheel. I’ll also be avoiding spoilers here, though, that won’t matter much because one of this DLC’s weaknesses is that it’s a little predictable, but we’ll get into why that is later on. For now, let’s catch you up to speed on what this DLC aims to explore. I remember one of the criticisms I heard from a friend was that they were disappointed that the Yotei Six were closer to the Yotei Five, seeing as how the snake is taken down the moment the game starts. Each member of the six gets more or less an entire region dedicated to their story, and Echoes of Sekigahara aims to provide that for the Snake, while also answering some questions about Atsu's past; specifically the events between her childhood and her time as the Ownryo. Before we go any further I just want to say that I got access to this DLC early thanks to Sony, and I am a massive fan of both Ghost of Tsushima, and Yotei. Ok, let’s dive further in. We get introduced to a semi love interest from Atsu's past, along with being introduced to their current relationship, which is not too loving at the moment. I think the places the story goes is interesting, and the way it parallels Atsu's current journey is really well done. Performances are top notch here, just like they were in the base game, and that goes for just about every praise from the base game, visuals especially. It’s especially staggering to see such beauty in a game with a budget of 60 million, a mere drop in the bucket of some major AAA that doesn't even come close to having this much sauce. The environments here are beautiful, the cutscenes gripping, the combat visceral, and the music fantastic. This brings me to some of the free parts of this update, which will be available for all players independent of owning the newest expansion. We get a new high contrast mode to make the colours pop just a bit more, which looks great on the base PS5, where I’m capturing everything in performance mode, and my favourite part is that we get a bunch of new tracks for the Watanabe mode, that replaces much of the music with samurai champloo inspired hip hop tracks, and it elevates this game to being so much easier to get immersed in. Not to get too off track, pun intended, but I think with a mode like this, they could have easily just slapped together some lo-fi hiphop and called it a day, but these tracks, even outside of their association with the game, are some damn good songs. I absolutely love this mode, and I love seeing it get overhauled here too. It’s playing in the background throughout this video.
