It is described in more detail here: https://tilings.math.uni-bielefeld.de/substitution/fractal-kite-dart/ . For a given kite-and-dart pattern, one can make a more detailed version through substitution: kite -to- kite+dart, dart -to- kite+2xdart. When this substitution is repeated many times, then the result is this fractal pattern. This version was laser-cut of 3-mm acrylic.
