Want faster, more precise dog training sessions? It is all about how you manage your treats! In this stationary food handling exercise, we focus on splitting the work between a "reward hand" and a "supply hand." The reward hand is exactly what it sounds like: the hand distributing the food to your dog. Your supply hand holds the rest of your treats so that you do not have to constantly reach into your vest or pouch every single time you need a reward. Think of your left hand as a PEZ dispenser, smoothly feeding treats into your right hand. If you reward with your left hand instead, simply reverse the roles. The goal is to keep your supply hand feeding your reward hand as efficiently as possible. We also have to think about reward placement because where you reward dictates where your dog positions themselves. By keeping your reward hand center mass and right up against your body, you encourage your dog to stay perfectly centered, nice and close to you. Have you tried the PEZ dispenser method?
