If your dog loses focus immediately after getting a reward, the problem may be how predictable your reward pattern has become. If your dog always receives one piece of food after completing a behavior, they can quickly learn the pattern: behavior → one treat → training is over. Instead, vary the reward event. Sometimes give multiple rewards. Add movement. Use praise and affection. Toss the food and let your dog move toward it. When your dog doesn’t know exactly when the reward event will end, they can become more invested in staying engaged with you.
