Explore: pyq.competishun.com --------------- Basic Organic Chemistry-IUPAC Nomenclature | Chemistry by N.S Sir | Class 11 & 12 | IIT JEE Main & Advanced In this video lecture by Neeraj Saini Sir (#NS_Sir) various terms used in Organic Chemistry have been explained with examples which are very important to understand the concepts of Organic Chemistry. Topics covered in this lecture of Basic Terms of Organic Chemistry (Class 11 &12 | IIT JEE Main & Advanced) by N.S Sir with timestamps are as follows:- 00:00 - 05:05 :- Identification of Relative positions with respect to Functional Groups :- Alpha carbon is the first carbon atom attached to a functional group, while beta carbon is the next carbon that is immediately adjacent to alpha carbon.Alpha carbon is the carbon atom adjacent to a functional group in an organic chemical compound. For example, carbonyl carbon atoms are alpha carbon atoms. Moreover, hydrogen atoms attached to this carbon atom are known as alpha hydrogen atoms. In addition, alpha carbon in an amino acid contains a carboxylic acid group and an amine group attached to it. Generally, the notation for alpha carbon is Cฮฑ.Beta carbon is the carbon atom bound second to a functional group. In other words, beta carbon attaches to the functional group via another carbon atom, which is the alpha carbon atom. Another name for beta carbon is secondary carbon. Generally, the second carbon following the carboxyl carbon is the beta carbon. The hydrogen atoms that are attached to a beta-carbon atom are named beta-hydrogen atoms. The beta-carbon atom is an essential part of many organic compounds, particularly those with long carbon chains, such as fatty acids and amino acids. The beta carbon in a beta amino acid contains a carboxylic acid group and an amine group attached to the adjacent carbon atom. The symbol C ฮฒ denotes the beta carbon. 05:15 -10:27 :- Identification of Hybridization :- Hybridization, in Chemistry, is defined as the concept of mixing two atomic orbitals to give rise to a new type of hybridized orbitals. This intermixing usually results in the formation of hybrid orbitals having entirely different energy, shapes, etc. The atomic orbitals of the same energy level mainly take part in hybridization. However, both fully-filled and half-filled orbitals can also take part in this process, provided they have equal energy.Based on the types of orbitals involved in mixing, the hybridization can be classified as sp3, sp2, sp, sp3d, sp3d2 and sp3d3. 10:28 - 20:07 :- Definiton of steric number with examples The Steric number is the total number of atoms directly bonded to a central metal atom and the number of lone pairs attached. Steric number plays an essential role in VSEPR (Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion) theory in assessing the molecular geometry. Steric number = (number of atoms bonded to the central atom) + (number of lone pairs of electrons on the central atom).Example-Carbon dioxide is an example of a molecule having steric number 2 ie-ยฝ X [4+0-0+0] = 2 Boron trifluoride is an example of a molecule having steric number 3. ยฝ X [3+3-0+0] = 3 ------------------------------------------------------- Free IIT JEE coaching, Free JEE Main lectures, Free online coaching for JEE, Free JEE Main and Advanced preparation, Best free lectures for JEE, JEE Advanced full syllabus crash course, Free coaching videos for IIT aspirants, Free JEE coaching by IITians, Complete JEE course on YouTube, Free mock tests and revision for JEE, #JEEMain #JEEAdvanced #Competishun #Organic Chemistry #MohitTyagi
