Topics covered in this lecture of Basic Terms of Organic Chemistry (Class 11 &12 | IIT JEE Main & Advanced) by N.S Sir with timestamps are as follows:- 00:00 - 04:35 :- Definiton and examples of Conjugated,Cumulative and Isolated double bonds:- a] Conjugated-These are compounds that possess two C=C double bonds. The classification of denes is based on the proximity of the ฯ bonds. b] Cumulative-When they are adjacent (connected), we have cumulated dienes which are called cumulenes. Allenes is another name used to describe these compounds. c] Isolated-When separated by one single bond, it is a conjugated diene. And when the double bonds are separated by more than one single bond, we have an isolated diene. 04:54 - 11:15 :- Defintion of aliphatic and Alicyclic compunds with examples :- An aliphatic compound or aliphatic hydrocarbon is an organic compound containing hydrogen and carbon atoms that are usually linked together in chains via single, double or triple bonds. Sometimes the chains are also in branched trains or in the form of non-aromatic structures. An alicyclic compound is an organic compound that is both aliphatic and cyclic. They contain one or more all-carbon rings which may be either saturated or unsaturated, but do not have aromatic character. 11:16 - 13:40 :- Definiton and explanation of Allylic position with example : Allylic position: In a molecule , the position next to an alkene. The allylic positions are labeled with asterisks.Example-CH2=CHCH2OH A site adjacent to the unsaturated carbon atom is called the allylic position or allylic site. A group attached at this site is sometimes described as allylic. Thus, CH2=CHCH2OH "has an allylic hydroxyl group ". Allylic CโH bonds are about 15% weaker than the CโH bonds in ordinary sp 3 carbon centers and are thus more reactive. 13:41 - 14:07 :- Definiton and explanation of Benzylic position with example : Benzylic position: The position next to the Benzene ring is called the Benzylic position.This position is very reactive and helpful in the synthesis of many organic compounds.Benzylic position can be stabilised by resonance, so it is highly stable.When any group is attached to Benzylic Carbon, Carbon adjacent to the Benzene ring is called the Benzylic group. For example - In Benzylic chloride, Chlorine is attached to benzyl. 14:08 - 14:56 :- Definiton and explanation of Vinylic position with example : Position of C=C double bond of alkene.The general formula for vinyl group is R-CH=CH 2 in which both carbon atoms are bonded with a double bond and R is attached at vinylic position. Since both carbon atoms form a double covalent bond so both are sp 2 hybridized. 14:57 - 15:30 :- Definiton of Arylic position : Position(sp2) of Aromatic compounds 15:35 - 23:20 :- Examples explaning the above mentioned positions 23:21 - 24:20 :- Definiton of prpargylic position : It is an alkyl group derived from propyne ( HCโกCโCH3 ). The term propargylic refers to a saturated position ( sp3 -hybridized) on a molecular framework next to an alkynyl group. 24:46 - 29:03 :- Definiton and examples of Geminal and Vicinal compounds: Geminal refers to a type of organic compound where two identical functional groups are attached to the same carbon atom. Examples of geminal compounds include geminal diols, which have two hydroxyl groups attached to the same carbon atom, and geminal dichlorides, which have two chlorine atoms attached to the same carbon atom. Vicinal, on the other hand, refers to a type of organic compound where two different functional groups are attached to adjacent carbon atoms. The term vicinal comes from the Latin word vicinus, meaning โneighboringโ.Examples of vicinal compounds include vicinal diols, which have two hydroxyl groups attached to adjacent carbon atoms, and vicinal dichlorides, which have two chlorine atoms attached to adjacent carbon atoms.
