The Good Place Season 1 Episode 4 REACTION | "Jason Mendoza" | First Time Watching | Syntell & Rekkai Syntell and Rekkai react to The Good Place Season 1, Episode 4 — "Jason Mendoza." Eleanor's situation just doubled. Jianyu breaks his silence and reveals the rest: he's actually Jason Mendoza — an amateur DJ from Jacksonville, Florida, who specialized in EDM, sold fake drugs to college kids, and did pranks on Vine. He has no idea how he got into the Good Place any more than Eleanor does. He's terrified. He wants Eleanor's help. Eleanor does not feel great about her chances. Tahani is organizing the grand opening of The Good Plates restaurant, including a three-tier cake that Chef Patricia spent a full week making. Jason, meanwhile, has built a secret hangout space he calls his butthole and spent the entire episode trying not to be himself — which becomes impossible the moment he goes full Mr. Music the DJ in the middle of the dinner. When he's about to blow both their covers during the story-sharing portion of the evening, Eleanor destroys Patricia's cake to create a distraction. It works. It also opens a sinkhole under the neighborhood. Chidi, who has watched all of this, offers to add Jason as a third student in his ethics class. Jason asks if there's a prom. Eleanor tells Jason that Chidi is putting himself at real risk to help them both because, unlike either of them, he is an amazing person. Jason agrees to go. The sinkhole gets bigger. Post-reaction: Syntell and Rekkai work through an episode that adds a second case study and immediately makes Eleanor look better by comparison. They cover the full chain of events that got Jason killed — Acid Cat, the Scott Disick afterparty offer, the breach-of-contract lawsuit, and the boat he blew up out of spite — and what it says that none of that slowed him down. The "be yourself" versus "be a better version of yourself" debate, and why Rekkai can sign on to one and not the other. Eleanor saving Jason through an act of genuine destruction — the road to hell is paved with good selfish intentions. And Rekkai's working theory: maybe the Good Place is phase one, a test to find out who you actually are when no one's keeping score. A Discord member delivers the line of the episode: "The Good Place is a philosophy class disguised as a sitcom."
