The Good Place Season 1 Episode 5 REACTION | "Category 55 Emergency Doomsday Crisis" | First Time Watching | Syntell & Rekkai Syntell and Rekkai react to The Good Place Season 1, Episode 5 — "Category 55 Emergency Doomsday Crisis." Eleanor is making real progress. At the frozen yogurt place, she let the person behind her go first — completely unprompted — and she's proud of it. She also forgot to get the yogurt. Chidi moves the ethics curriculum to utilitarianism: the correct action is the one that produces the most good and the least suffering. Jason provides the example Chidi wasn't expecting. He once hid stolen boogie boards in the garage of Sheila — a black market alligator dealer with a pierced jawbone — and called the police on her. Sheila was about to marry Donkey Doug, the break dancing crew's best popping locker, and move to Sarasota. He framed one innocent gator dealer to save a 60-person crew. Chidi is stunned to admit this is technically a utilitarian dilemma. The sinkhole is not getting better. Michael declares a Category 55 Emergency Doomsday Crisis and orders a full lockdown — no one leaves their home. Tahani's charity auction is already underway when her sister Camila arrives — a world-class painter, Olympic gold medalist, Grammy winner, and Oxford graduate — and proceeds to outshine her at every turn. The will reading delivers the final blow: everything went to Camila, and Tahani's portion was bequeathed to "Tahini," misspelled in the will like a condiment. The neighborhood ranking manual surfaces: Tahani is second to last, Jianyu is second, Eleanor is sixth. Bart and Nina — a couple displaced by the sinkhole who specialize in massage and relationship counseling, though not exclusively — move into the house. Chidi tells Eleanor she is a full-time job and he should be doing paradise things. The fight is brief. Eleanor, when she comes back around, tells Chidi she knows she's a utilitarian nightmare whose existence keeps him from his real soulmate — she gives him a picture, tells him she'll leave him alone, and says that whatever else is true, they're friends. The sinkhole begins healing. Michael pulls Eleanor aside: he has no idea what caused it, and no idea what fixed it. He needs her in his office first thing in the morning. Post-reaction: Syntell and Rekkai spend most of the review on Tahani. She has come across as the show's version of a perfect person — accomplished, formidable, impossible to be around — and this episode reveals that none of it was ever enough. She grew up being eclipsed by Camila, chased every accomplishment trying to be seen, and her parents still misspelled her name in the will. Rekkai's ranking read: if this is a proving ground, the people near the bottom are the ones who barely need to grow — Tahani is second to last because she's already close to finished. Jason is second because he is a walking disaster who probably should not be allowed to speak. The question neither host can shake: Eleanor's emotional state is clearly affecting the neighborhood — the sinkhole opened when she was at her worst, healed when she made peace — but Jason is just as wrong. Why her? And whoever is ranked number one — a name neither host has ever heard of — must be something else entirely.
