By the year 2006, Nintendo had seen nearly a decade of rough times in the home console market. Outclassed by Sony's PlayStation at the tail end of the '90s, it had then witnessed Sega getting booted out of the hardware store by the even more formidable PlayStation 2. Almost as soon as it got in the seventh-gen game by releasing the Gamecube, computer colossus Microsoft then decided to throw its giant, fluorescent green hat into the ring by unveiling the Xbox, and within a few years Nintendo was trailing in third place. Mario needed to find a refuge, a safe harbor of nostalgia where his good old-fashioned platforming would be appreciated, not laughed at and dismissed. Luckily for him, the Nintendo DS was ready and waiting to pick up where the Game Boy Advance left off, and the portable market was one domain where Nintendo was still unquestionably the king. Ports of his classic games had been selling like hotcakes for years, and the time was ripe to show everybody that Nintendo still had the chops to make groundbreaking 2D games starring everyone's favorite Italian plumber. ...I mean, they did still have those chops, right?
