Currently Playing: Super Mario Galaxy Was An Inspired Compromise (YOM #9)

In late 2007, just when things seemed darkest for the 3D Super Mario series, a brilliant light shone out of the east. It was a new Mario game that, unlike the previous year's New Super Mario Bros., would actually push the envelope with new gameplay dimensions, top-of-the-line graphics and sound, and a surprisingly deep and engaging story. This was a game of many contradictions. It could only have been made by Nintendo, yet the team that created it worked hundreds of miles away from the company's Kyoto headquarters amid the teeming metropolis of Tokyo. It had a phenomenal level of polish and seemed like something made by seasoned veterans, yet the division responsible for it had only made one game before, and not a successful one. Most of all, Super Mario Galaxy seemed to partake of all the previous Mario games at once, taking a pinch here and a teaspoon there of whatever it wanted, the result being one of the strangest melanges ever seen in a major Nintendo franchise. It was experimental. It was eclectic. It was impossible to ignore. And it just might be my favorite Mario game ever. It's hard to tell with a game that's about as "out there", in more than one sense, as Mario would ever get. Thanks for watching, everybody!
