[Music] on a beratory man born in breeding dubbo western new south wales which is a regular country which is the biggest thing land tribe in western new south wales as you know i've followed my father's dream tracks up to the north coast up around bellington nam buckerheads and i'm in the radio why broadcasting radio and that's why i'm down here in south australia now because i broadcast down here now people are always asking me you know a river do you believe in the owies when i go well matter of fact they do and we call them i don't know people walk up to me that i haven't met they've never seen before me hold more natural and they walk up and ask me that question because they're rural people like they live out in the bush and i say look the first thing i've always you're smelling before you see them and they can move like the wind for the size of them and i've seen the little fellas uncles they all telling me it was called brown jacks and there's two lots there's the big fella and the little fella and the little fight was more or less our spiritual guide but the big father is different again tell me when that was and take me through your experience well i was with my uncle and his name was dabu ted thomas and uh gabu means the elder of the elders he was the man and i went down the holidays down there one time and this is back in our gee whiz this would have been back in 1979 70 yeah so it's 78.79 load of people i know i can't remember exactly now i think that might have been from budapest or something there's about 30 people and they had an interpreter they met uncle ted along this dry creek bed just down to wallace lake going toward a place called pigeonhouse rock and we met up with these people and my uncle was getting told by the interpreter like asked where we going and uncle was telling him and then he's telling the other people in the language you know what's going on and so the bus followed us to the foot of pension house we walk along this dry creek bed with all these people and they've got their bags and their sandwiches and their drinks and everything you know and when i'm gone walking with uncle and when he was walking he just had his nose up in the air and sniffing anyway and he was saying always sniff son when you come out here yeah and don't come out on your own yet he did all the time he even sat down in the caves with these people with these these beasts we got to a certain point and we got to where these two creek beds met and he stopped and he put his hand up for the rest of the people to stop and he said no no no no we go this way because he could smell him and people were saying oh there's something dead you know the interpreter is saying is there something dead around here and you know because he could hear their people talking and no that was the smell of them he didn't want them to see the dollar goals because that's we're invading gorigal's territory yeah and we heard the tree knocking that was another thing three knocks on a tree that was the other thing so we my uncle stopped and then diverted the crew to another way away from it was this the same place where you actually saw these things or was that in another another no no no no this is different again you know this is different again it wasn't down south this was up in thoran up in the valley just down below the dorian mountains just that the foothills wearing the blouse leaving the rain forest up there about 30 days in the bush i've got a place called thora and i was doing breakfast radio one morning and i was starting at six o'clock in the morning i had to leave about an hour you know quite past five or something like that to get into bellingen clinton set my show up and yeah it was a kind of a foggy kind of a not real foggy but you could see i mean you don't have your high beams under the fog but it was it was still suitable you could still see but it was a misty type fog and i was coming down this bridge called hobart's bridge that's only just well probably about two k's from where i live anyway i was coming down to the bridge and i was coming across and on the other side is a bit of a clearing on your left and the road swings to your right after you come over the bridge and on that bit of a clearing i've seen these two big figures and then there's three little ones and the three little ones ran across the road and the two big ones followed but they just ambled um kind of slouched forward long arms down to around about their knees one of them was around about eight foot the other one's around about six and a half seven matted hair i got a look of the big fella's face no hair on his face i couldn't see ears because of the hair but it was matted here um knotty and the little ones they had perfect there fur the little ones were kind of goldy brown dark brown goldy but the bigger followers were calling a black mat what did they remind you of when you're looking at them like people or animals or what what did you get a sense of i looked eight features in the face it was bigger than like say a silverback taller than a silverback wider across the shoulders big pectorals yeah it was just huge to me like when i first seen it and i had about five cups of coffee so i was you i was right i just went wow i've seen it again i told people after the radio show i went in after the show i talked to a couple of people about it and they've told me the same thing they leave up the back they've got friends with the back of dorigo and they've told me things up there too and so we sat down and had a bit of a chat about it all so yeah so i've seen an actual family another time i was driving for bab transport out of dubbo and this would have been 11 30 at night and i'm coming just coming onto the pillager the pelicans grab and i was delivering stuff to uh the pubs out there and anyway and i had to pull in to baradine first and when i got in i got about 10ks and as you know on the trucks you've got your big bull lights now these bull lights out on the track on a kenworth i could see at least easier kilometer in front of me easy anyway and i come around this bend and you know when you come around to bend how your lights sweep around well was coming around this right-hander and there he was he's fella standing on the side the road now i knew this is 11 30 at night i knew it wasn't hitchhiking i was thinking yourself well what's someone doing wandering out here hitchhiking at night but it wasn't a hitchhiker brother it was a big lady was bad he was big he would have been yeah close on the nine foot easy easy four pick handles across the shoulders easy and when he stopped he turned a little bit and looked at the lights it was like the lights transfixed him type thing you know and i seen him i seen him he'd have been about about half the length of a football field he's seen me and i seen him and then when he stopped and he looked at the lights he just shot off straight into the bush and there's no way i was going to stop and turn around to see me trailer what year was that do you remember roughly when that was that was 1994 with bib transport there was another time where there were three of us unfortunately two of well they've passed on now which was the which was the thing when they were alive we used to share these stories but we used to go out foxing and we'd knock the rule over the 22 and we got the room and we'd make up cyanide tablets and put the tablets in with cans of power inside the kangaroo and when the foxes would sit on the back of the uten whistle there was one particular morning would have been about 1 30 in the morning it was already freezing anyway me mate's got the light on the back of the the land rovers we're on the back of that just a tray and we've got the bull light up on the top of the roof of the of the land rover and we just kind of just whistling like that for the foxes we got about two kilometers down the road we stopped next week we heard this cracking of the branches and trees and stuff there was a lot of hills behind us but there was a lot of lantana and stuff that was really thick anyway we're on this dirt road and we stopped and we heard the trees cracking and everything i'm thinking that's a bit big for a fox you know and so we shine the bull right around to where it was to where the sound was and between these two gum trees we've seen this follow this head look around the side of the tree at us and we had the light bang smack on him and he was that wide he was whiter than a gun tree and a gum tree would have been around about easy three and a four foot wide and it was wider than that we could see his body and when his head poked around that was it and we made it the gun up the shirt even i said no no no no how do you know you might be someone out there mupping around with the scariness or something you know but when it ran it just took off like mate it was just like a bullet out of a gun it just took off and we could hear it running up that was on a saturday morning and we're meeting up for cricket and i was telling the lads about it then you know and they i swear and we told them where it was and that was out on menorah road just out of dubbo got a friend's uncle who lives out there and they were out there in the barbecue one night and they heard the same thing so i mean they're out there rather they're out there and i've seen them i've seen them like a lot of people are skeptical a lot of people say i've got to see to believe it but i tell you what they are out there brother they are out there when you grow up did you hear stories about like hairy man absolutely yeah absolutely that's what i was saying we got the two lots we've got the little fella the brown jacks and we've got the big follower how do like indigenous people talk about the difference between both because you said like the little ones are like spiritual but the big ones are they like people how do you describe the difference between both swords well they can hurt you the big ones and then the little followers that ain't it's hard to explain but our people always told us our elders always told us don't go out of nighttime in the bush don't swim in the rivers at night time because the bad mimi's in the in the in the rivers they they're bad mini spirits there's good and bad memes and the bad memories of the the women are drowning in the rivers at nighttime and what comes down there to drink is doula girls when reading about it myself i heard doula girls a word that comes from south coast new south wales but there's other words from other places yeah i use dylan because that's what i heard from my uncles and everything down the south coast so i used that i used all the girl out at um and wherever i go yeah i use dulgar because i just let him know and say well we go and lean shawy and there's other words too but it's been spotted down here too do indigenous people say like the hairy man and the aoe are the same thing or they different the same it's just the same followed but in a different form if you know what i mean something you get big some you get little some don't smell some do but generally they do and that's what i was saying earlier you're smelling before you're saying my elders always said don't go out at night don't go in the bush wandering on your own at night because you'll see them did your family when they're talking about the doula girl on the south coast so they would tell you where they came from or how they came here or what their place is were they here before indigenous people came to australia or did they or are they spiritual do you know what i mean like where where these yeah my uncle used to say that they were here before the white man and my uncle's father's father my eldest grandfather used to say that he used to see him my grandfather's father yeah it goes right all the way back before the white man even come here they were here indigenous people got along with them or just left them alone or kept away from them or well we had our like our boundaries and they had their boundaries we never crossed them but when we did we'd be getting thrown rocks at or sticks at and then you know you've got to get out of their territory or you see the trees crossed in the bush that bring you know where you've got your trees crossed and across you know you're entering into their territory what what other things do doula girls do i mean in terms of like behavior and stuff you mentioned crossing trees and stuff but other things they do that like indigenous people say oh that's that's the doula girl they put rocks on top of each other they move things on our friend who's got big rocks 25 30 kg in their driveway and they've heard noises and trees cracking and stuff and they found their rocks four meters away from where and no man could lift them you'd have to get something like a leave or someone but they do come around your homes i have been at a house where my mate has got four dogs and they just went absolutely bananas he could just see the silhouette of something but he's got sheep and chooks and he's they listen a few sheep i don't know how they got on with all these bushfires they would have had to go somewhere i'd say caves the smaller fellas have always been spiritual little lads and the bigger followers they're different again are there places where if you went you might likely see them or is it pretty much everywhere in the bush or you know like or whether it's with a special place there is spots down there in the south coast um they've been spotted down there wallagher lake around that area i've only speaking of my brother down at burma gooey it was only three days ago and i was talking about a mate bumping in the mood at a place called mount compass down here and asking me about yeah i was no i don't i didn't even know this blade from a bar and he asked me because i'm aboriginal he said he said i know you're indigenous can i ask you something i said yeah mate what said he said do you believe in cowie's this is on your way to a radio station down at victor where i go on broadcast i just happened to pull in to get a pie and i've got to talk about this flag for 10 minutes then it seems like a lot of people are interested in them aren't they you know like they see it but they don't believe it and i said it was bloke but why did you ask me he said because we don't have many indigenous people around this area and where he's from he's from up in the ranges up in the lofty ranges and he said um he spoke to someone and they said if you see an aboriginal chap ask him and i just happened to walk into the show with the big ones though do they have like a community do they have families like you know is there much you can talk about what indigenous people say about the the big hairy men the doula girl well my uncle uncle ted thomas used to used to go and sit with him he used to sit with them up in their caves and he'd come back and he wouldn't tell us where they were but he'd tell us what they talked about and it was all about environment so he could communicate with them he could communicate with him brother in his language or just did he ever talk about how that happened or just that it happened whether it was in his lingo or whether it was in just normal language i'm not quite sure but he said he's spoken to him and he said they will learn one of the numbers with all i want to talk about was the environment that's what they talk about the encroachment of humans i remember reading somewhere that some indigenous people believe that you'll see a doula girl because you're doing something inappropriate in the bush like you're being disrespectful or you're upsetting something that that was one reason why they show themselves yeah they're watching you well before you even know they're there if you urinate on a tree or a gum tree like that have you have you ever heard them raw they've got two sounds they've got a squealing sound and they've just got this raw wheel they must be able to bring this raw from the pit of their stomachs from somewhere because it just goes forever this raw i've heard that and i've heard the squeal like out in the bush you know and that friends wouldn't be and i say no time to go we're at wallager lake we've gone down to this spot and it's right down the bottom where these big water tanks are and there was about five of all sitting around playing the guitar with the fire and going we're all having a nice sing along and my cousin's gone off to go and do his business and he was back in about one minute and he's shaking and carrying on and he was white as a ghost in his blackest car but he was white as a ghost what's going on with you and he said no come on we got to go and that's when he brought me other brother i was talking to the other night that's when he said he said dog he said can you smell he said oh yeah and that's when we got the smell van and that was it we just packed up camp mate and we hooked it yeah they're out there brother been done like i said i've seen them smelled and heard them you
