A family in Camp Verde, Arizona needs help after a horrific accident leaves their Toyota Sequoia at the bottom of a 400-foot cliff. The driver somehow walked away from this devastating rollover, making this one of the most unbelievable off-road rescue missions we’ve ever been involved in. The family knew Murphys Diesel performs free off-road recoveries whenever possible, so they reached out hoping our crew could help recover the wrecked SUV from terrain that most recovery vehicles would never attempt. After seeing the photos, we loaded up the Midnight Express and headed toward Camp Verde expecting a difficult vehicle recovery. What we found was far worse. As soon as Wrecker Rick arrived on scene, it became clear this wasn’t a standard towing job. The cliffside recovery would require specialized off-road recovery equipment, expert rigging, and a custom-built recovery truck capable of reaching terrain where conventional wreckers simply cannot operate. The damaged Toyota Sequoia was buried deep below the roadway in some of the most challenging recovery conditions we’ve seen in Arizona. After evaluating the scene, the team realized there was only one truck capable of performing this extreme off-road recovery: HB, our custom Ram 5500 off-road wrecker. Built specifically for backcountry rescues, cliff recoveries, and impossible vehicle extractions, HB has become one of the most capable recovery trucks in the country. There was just one problem. The narrow mountain trails leading to the crash site were too tight for HB’s massive 58-inch tires. For the first time in the history of our custom Ram 5500 build, the crew was forced to completely change the setup and shrink the tire package just to access the recovery route. What seemed like a simple off-road rescue quickly turned into a major operation requiring new planning, additional equipment, and a return trip the following day. With steep drop-offs, dangerous terrain, limited access, and a wrecked SUV sitting hundreds of feet below the road, this cliff recovery had all the ingredients for one of the most intense heavy recovery operations we’ve ever filmed. Every foot gained would have to be earned, and every decision carried serious consequences. Will HB conquer terrain it was never designed to fit through?
