Why did Hitler withdraw Germany from the League of Nations in October 1933? Publicly, Hitler argued that Germany was being denied equality. The victorious powers of World War I had imposed strict limits on German armaments, while international disarmament negotiations had failed to produce the broader disarmament Germany demanded. But Hitler’s foreign-policy ambitions went far beyond equal treatment. Leaving the League and the World Disarmament Conference removed an obstacle to the Nazi regime’s increasingly aggressive rearmament program. At home, Hitler presented the decision as a restoration of German sovereignty and national dignity.
