What happened when German soldiers murdered Polish civilians and prisoners of war during the invasion of Poland in 1939? Adolf Hitler granted them a broad amnesty. On October 4, 1939, Hitler issued a decree protecting perpetrators of certain crimes committed in occupied Poland from prosecution. The decree invoked alleged Polish atrocities against Germans, echoing Nazi propaganda used to justify violence during the invasion. Although German military courts could still prosecute offenses such as looting and rape, the amnesty helped shield perpetrators of killings presented as retaliation against Poles. The decree revealed an important truth about the German invasion of Poland: Nazi mass violence was not something that began only after the military campaign.
