After years of political deadlock, conservative elites believed they could control Adolf Hitler by appointing him chancellor. Instead, Hitler used emergency powers, political violence, and legal manipulation to turn democratic institutions into weapons against themselves. The Reichstag Fire, mass arrests of political opponents, terror disguised as law enforcement, and the Enabling Act of March 23, 1933 stripped parliament of its power and handed Hitler full legislative authority. All of it happened within weeks—and largely followed legal procedures.
