Did Adolf Hitler really have only one testicle, as the famous WWII British propaganda song claimed? The mocking wartime song “Hitler Has Only Got One Ball” became one of the most famous pieces of Allied propaganda during World War II. But was it just a joke, or was there some truth behind it? One common myth claims Hitler lost a testicle during the Battle of the Somme in World War I, supposedly from shrapnel wounds. Historians generally dismiss this story because it comes from a late second-hand account by a former medic. Another claim came from a 1968 Soviet autopsy report, which stated that Hitler was missing a testicle. But historians now know that no full Soviet autopsy was ever performed on Adolf Hitler, since the recovered remains were mostly ashes and bone fragments. However, a more credible clue comes from 1923 medical records from Landsberg Prison, where Hitler was examined after the Beer Hall Putsch. The prison doctor noted that Hitler suffered from right-side cryptorchidism, a condition where a testicle fails to descend into the scrotum. That means Hitler likely wasn’t missing a testicle, but one may never have descended. Recent and highly debated genetic research has even suggested the possibility of Kallmann syndrome, a rare condition sometimes linked to undescended testicles, though the evidence remains far from conclusive. So did Hitler really have only one testicle? We may never know for certain. But the famous WWII song may have been closer to reality than its writers ever imagined.
