What did German generals know about Nazi mass murder in Poland and why didn’t they stop it? During the invasion of Poland in September 1939, senior German officers received reports of shootings and planned violence against Polish civilians and elites. Military intelligence chief Wilhelm Canaris protested to Wilhelm Keitel, warning that the Wehrmacht would ultimately share responsibility for crimes committed under its eyes. But the German officer corps never mounted a collective challenge. Some officers objected to Nazi methods, while others supported brutal occupation policies—and Wehrmacht units themselves also committed crimes against civilians and prisoners. Private dissent, institutional loyalty and outright complicity ultimately produced the same result: the killing continued.
