How did a Polish submarine escape across the Baltic and North Sea without navigation charts during World War II? In September 1939, the Polish submarine ORP Orzeł entered neutral Tallinn, Estonia, where authorities interned the crew and began disarming the vessel. But commander Jan Grudziński and his crew refused to give up. After sabotaging the disarmament process and overpowering their guards, they escaped Tallinn during the night of September 17–18, 1939. With their charts confiscated and most of their torpedoes removed, the crew navigated using lighthouse information, observations and dead reckoning. Despite German patrols, navigational challenges and encounters with British forces that initially could not identify them, Orzeł eventually reached Scotland on October 14, 1939. The submarine’s escape became one of the most extraordinary naval stories of the early Second World War. But another submarine was about to make history. How did a single German U-boat penetrate Britain’s naval base at Scapa Flow, sink HMS Royal Oak and escape?
