It is at its very best when making weird, wonderful, unconventional music, and 'Outside the Box' checks all of those, er, boxes. Billy recalls, "Steve mentioned to me that he had this guitar idea that he didn't know what to do with. I asked him to let me take it home and mess with it. I'd arranged some drums, with differing rhythmic patterns that worked well with the crazy bass part Id composed. I brought it back to Steve, and he really liked it. Jay's drums on the song are outstanding. He took the ideas and made them his own." "The programming for that was very odd," Jay recalls. "There are more than two things going on at once. To bring it home, and to keep the spirit I found lots of interesting parts I could play sequentially, but live. Billy and I decided to create a build of complexity, because as each section goes by, there are slightly different changes in the rhythm track. The drums go into full time, half time, wipe and close it up, syncopate - simply syncopate — get complex, then add more fills, more accents, then build to the point where it finally gets to a crescendo."
